Week Notes – July 14 to July 20 2025
- 📍 I’ve started (more) consistently bookmarking the articles and videos I’ve watched throughout the week so I can include them in my week notes below. Enjoy!
- ⏲️ I got one of those visual timers to start doing focus sessions (aka Pomodoro Technique) and it’s been helping me a lot to get things done without feeling overwhelmed. I’ve used this technique before and getting back to it has been refreshing! Inspired by How to Get Things Done When You Have Trouble Getting Things Done.
- 🍎 I received the results from a food allergy test I took last month and discovered I have sensitivities to several foods: milk, yogurt, cheese, eggs, almonds, spinach, black beans, green beans, pinto beans, hemp, quinoa, sunflower seeds, walnuts, pecans, Brazil nuts, onion, sesame seeds, and mustard. I’ve been readjusting my diet, and even in the first few days just by cutting out almond milk, cheese, yogurt, and eggs I noticed a reduction in my symptoms.
- 🦵 I’ve started experiencing knee pain, something I’ve never felt before. I’ve been running more frequently this summer, and the discomfort worsens with longer or more frequent runs. I’ve begun taking at least two days of rest between sessions, and I plan to get an X-ray next week to better understand what’s going on.
- 🧩 I finally framed my Iron Maiden puzzle!
📌 Cool online reads:
- Ultra-Processed Minds: The End of Deep Reading and What It Costs Us: an exploration of the decline of long form reading in today’s digital age. I enjoyed the analogy with ultra-processed foods: today’s online reading is super-fast, fragmented, and superficial.
- Experimental June: week four – Manu: reflections on a month-long experiment with drastically cutting digital consumption and increasing his meditation practice.
- Black Sabbath played their final show and it was great! – 82MHz: I haven’t watched this show yet, but I enjoyed Andreas's appreciation of the amazing legacy of this band.
- The Who Cares Era | dansinker.com: Excellent piece discussing the shift to AI generated, disposable and profit-driven content that is flooding the internet. I agree with his call to embrace imperfection and intentionality and “care loudly”.
📺 Videos I enjoyed:
- How to Start Reading Again – Jared Henderson: Some ideas on how to get back to reading with a discussion about why men are reading less than women. I loved the section about slowing down and writing down the first page of the books he enjoys by hand, to pay attention to details. I want to try this out!
- The Food of the Lord of the Rings (and its significance) – kaptainkristian: a beautiful video essay about food and it’s cultural significance through the lens of fantasy.
- Who says you can’t wear high fantasy outfits in real life (Moiraine’s coat from Wheel of Time) – Bernadette Banner: I loved how she made this beautiful hood-and-scarf combo inspired by Wheel of Time.
- Black Sabbath, Black Sabbath – A Classical Musician’s First Listen and Reaction: it’s so fascinating to watch her deconstruct this classic, which marks the beginnings of heavy metal. She gives some insights about the so called “devil’s interval” or tritone.
- Black Sabbath, Black Sabbath- A Classical Musician’s In-Depth Analysis: a more detailed analysis, where she demonstrates the tritone on the piano and dives deeper into the song composition, making some parallels with classical composition by Holst.
- Gustav Holst – The Planets – Mars, the Bringer of War: this is the song she mentions in the above video as a reference to Black Sabbath’s song.
- Black Sabbath, War Pigs – A Classical Musician’s First Listen and Reaction: another fascinating analysis of this heavy metal classic.
