Finally skating again on the Rideau Canal Skateway

<![CDATA[⛸️ Today all the 7.8 kilometres of the Rideau Canal Skateway opened! The weather was not too cold (1C) and the ice condition was rated “Very Good” which is not something I’ve seen often. It’s been 2 years since I’ve been there. Last year it only opened for 10 days, and I didn’t get a chance to go and the year before it didn’t even open because of weather conditions.

I went there with my partner, and we skated for almost 2 hours for a total of 13 km! The ice was very good indeed, with just a few cracks and bumps. And I was glad I could happily glide along it. It’s the farthest we’ve ever skated. A light snow started to fall halfway through our route, and it started to get wet, with the snow melting on the surface of our clothes. But we made it back where we started! I was exhausted at the end, feeling like I had run a 10k, even though we took breaks along the way. But it was energizing and fun. I did fall once because of a bump on the ice, but it was very slow motion, and I used all the training I had on how to fall safely. I was okay!

I love my recent pair of figure ice skates; they are comfortable and warm. I finally found ice skates that don’t hurt my feet!

We went ice skating on the Canal in the morning, then in the afternoon we had our weekly Ice-Skating class. I definitely had less energy during the class, but I made it all right. I’m still working on my forward crossovers, backwards skating and 1-foot glides.

The weather forecast looks good for the Canal for the next couple of weeks, so I’d like to skate there again before the end of this winter.

Now I need some hot chocolate ☕.

—-

Post 69/100 of 100DaysToOffload challenge! #100DaysToOffload #100Days

#winter #iceskating #noisymusings #journal

Thoughts? a href="https://remark.as/p/noisydeadlines.net/finally-skating-again-on-the-rideau-canal-skateway"Discuss.../a if you have a Write.as account or Reply by email
-------
By Noisy Deadlines
Minimalist in progress, nerdy, introvert, skeptic.
Slowing down and COVID-19

<![CDATA[My partner tested positive for COVID-19 and he has been feeling awful for 4 days now but no fever. I'm still testing negative, but my throat is sore, and I feel a little weak and slow today.

We are both isolating ourselves, I'm working from home. We cancelled our plans to visit some friends in Montreal this weekend.

I'm glad my partner and I are not having any serious symptoms, thanks to the (four) booster vaccines :)

This is the first time during the whole pandemic that we got in really close contact with the virus, I guess. Neither of us has ever tested positive or had symptoms before.

I feel like switching to Holiday-mode this year feels harder than usual for some reason. I will be on vacation next week, so I plan on going for some winter hikes. And also: read a lot, being cozy under blankets with a cup of tea. Watch some shows that have been on my @to-watch list for a while. Do longer yoga sessions. Journal whenever I feel like.

I guess it’s been such a busy year for us, we’ve completed a bunch of long-term projects that started 3-4 years ago, which is nice. So many things happened, good and bad, and it has been a little overwhelming.

I really need time off. I hope I will get into my end-of-year reflection mode and find some stillness.

And here some snowy visuals (I love the snow that accumulates in tree branches, looks like cotton candy)

#health #covid #journal #noisymusings #winter

Thoughts? a href="https://remark.as/p/noisydeadlines.net/slowing-down-and-covid-19"Discuss.../a if you have a Write.as account or Reply by email
-------
By Noisy Deadlines
Minimalist in progress, nerdy, introvert, skeptic. I’d like to practice more. With no indoor rinks available and only a few outdoor refrigerated rinks open, the Canal is the best option to go practice.

#winter #iceskating #noisymusings

Thoughts? a href="https://remark.as/p/noisydeadlines.net/i-went-ice-skating-again"Discuss.../a if you have a Write.as account or Reply by email
-------
By Noisy Deadlines
Minimalist in progress, nerdy, introvert, skeptic.
Ice Skating - Difficulty level: HARD

<![CDATA[I went ice skating on the Rideau Canal this morning. Ice conditions were good (according to the City website) but there was a forecast of 40% chance of light snow. Temperature was nice at around -5C. I decided to go because you never how long the canal is going to be open and it was a chance to experience ice skating under the snow.

And... the only difference is that because it is snowing, and snow will accumulate on the ice you can't really see the ice imperfections anymore. The Canal skateway is never perfect, so usually you see some cracks and bumps here and there and you can avoid them. But today, the difficulty level was turned to HARD. You know you have obstacles but they are hidden: GO!

I did fall once because of a hidden bump, and I was probably skating slower than normal (which is not very fast anyway).

Rideau Canal: skating on a snowy day - Feb 07, 2021
Snow and ice

And now I know what it feels like to skate with snow conditions! Not my favourite experience but at the same time I could focus more on keep on moving instead of looking for bumps on the ice. It was... interesting.

#winter #noisymusings #iceskating #outdoors

Thoughts? a href="https://remark.as/p/noisydeadlines.net/ice-skating-difficulty-level-hard"Discuss.../a if you have a Write.as account or Reply by email
-------
By Noisy Deadlines
Minimalist in progress, nerdy, introvert, skeptic.
Ice Skating Experiences at the Canal

<![CDATA[Rideau Canal Skateway, Dows Lake, 2021
Rideau Canal Skateway @ Dows Lake

The Rideau Canal Skateway is known as the world’s largest skating rink. It's 7,8km long when the whole length is open. But there must be ideal winter weather conditions to allow it to open. Like constant negative temperatures for several days to create a sufficient thickness of water to freeze. It only opens a section when the ice is at least 30cm thick. Days with temperatures above zero with rain are a disaster for this huge outdoor rink.
2021 was one of the latest openings in the canal history. Maybe it was a combination of mild weather conditions and the pandemic restrictions.

But it opened!

There was 5km open this weekend and I checked it out. Because of COVID-19 all food stands, skate rentals and changing facilities were closed. But there were lots of benches thorough to let people change into their skates. We have to carry our own boots (no lockers there) so a backpack is definitely recommended. It was not busy since the City is strongly saying that only Ottawa residents should go to avoid crowds. It was easy to keep physical distancing. And masks are mandatory.

Skating under Flora Footbridge, that was built and opened in 2019
Skating under Flora Footbridge. First time!

Every time I go to the canal it's an intense experience. The cold, the ice cracks and bumps, the beautiful eerie scenery, the challenge. Ice skating is not natural to me so I still struggle. This time I tried skating 4 km. I consider it significant progress. Because I did skate 4 km one way + 3.5km back. It was a much better experience than last time. But I got exhausted! And what happens when you get tired ice skating? Your balance is gone. So I fell once, got up, kept going and stopped every now and then to rest. Up until the point I couldn't move anymore without totally loosing balance. My legs got wobbly because of the physical strain. I had to remove my skates and walk the rest of the way to the car. So, yeah, ice skating is intense! Not to mention I was sweating under my ski suit even though it was -15C with a real feel of -21C! ⛄

Getting some rest at the Rideau Canal Skateway, 2021
Getting some rest...

I still think ice skating is one of the hardest physical things I had to learn in my life. Heck, I'm still learning. I cannot do any fancy stuff, I can go forwards and I (awkwardly) stop. And that's it. I try to practice things like one foot glides and C-pushes. Maybe one day I'll be able to do cross-overs. The great thing about the Canal is that there is lots of space to practice! And I have fun!

Another aspect that makes me enjoy ice skating, with all its difficulties and struggles, is that it requires total focus. I can't be anywhere else. And balancing is subtle. Slight changes to the angles of the skates on the ice and the body's center of gravity can accelerate you, stop you or bring you to the floor. If feels like a crazy physics experiment.

With all the indoor rinks closed I'll probably be visiting the Canal every weekend, weather permitting. It's going to be an excellent practice.

#iceskating #learning #challenge #noisymusings #winter

Thoughts? a href="https://remark.as/p/noisydeadlines.net/ice-skating-experiences-at-the-canal"Discuss.../a if you have a Write.as account or Reply by email
-------
By Noisy Deadlines
Minimalist in progress, nerdy, introvert, skeptic.
Smiley trees in Winter

<![CDATA[Mud Lake - Jan 17, 2021

I saw smiley trees on my walk today :-)
Cloudy day, -1°C, some accumulated snow from yesterday.

I'm loving these longer winter walks. Taking the time to observe the surroundings, breath in the cold air, watch squirrels and birds doing their thing.

It's not something I did a lot before the pandemic, because I would spent a lot of time inside a gym, resulting in not much time left for the outdoors. Also, the cold. This year has not been too cold so it's easier to get out. But I want to keep doing it, even when it gets colder (as it surely will!).

Mud Lake - Jan 17, 2021

#noisymusings #outdoors #hiking #winter

Thoughts? a href="https://remark.as/p/noisydeadlines.net/smiley-trees-in-winter"Discuss.../a if you have a Write.as account or Reply by email
-------
By Noisy Deadlines
Minimalist in progress, nerdy, introvert, skeptic.
<![CDATA[It was such a lovely day for a long walk today! Temperature at around -7C, moderate wind, blue skies.
A walk of almost 10Km along the Ottawa River, starting at the Mud Lake up until the Andrew Haydon Park and back.

Mud Lake - Jan 09, 2021
Mud Lake

Andrew Haydon Park - Jan 09, 2021
Andrew Haydon Park

We saw people skating in the lake, playing hockey, skiing and doing this thing where you have a snowboard or skis and let a kite move you through the ice. It's exactly like kite surfing in water but in snow. I don't know if there is a specif name for this winter sport. It's the first time I saw people doing it. The only version I knew was the one in the summer (in the water). Sounds fun!

Ottawa River - People Kite Surfing in snow - Jan 09, 2021
Ottawa River - People "Kite Surfing" in snow

We spotted squirrels and birds.
